There are five Of Mice and Men quotations below.  For each of the quotations:

1. Name the language feature,
2. Analyse the language feature,
3. Do a word level analysis.

1) 'She struggled violently under his hands.'

2) 'Her feet battered on the hay and she writhed to be free.'

3) 'And she continued to struggle, and her eyes were wild with terror.'

Steinbeck uses a metaphor, 'The silence fell on the room’, and to show that the killing of Candy's other half was gratuitous. He also foreshadows that Candy if feeling miasma-like by using the adverb 'again'. In addition Steinbeck also uses, 'It came out of the night and invaded the room.’ to foreshadow that now, after the death of Candy's dog, the once auxiliaries off Candy, have become nothing but a repugnant after taste of his life.

Situation:  Candy, and the rest of the men in the bunkhouse, are waiting for Carlson to shoot Candy's dog.

1) 'The silence fell on the room again.  It came out of the night and invaded the room.'

2) 'They took places opposite each other at the table under the light, but George did not shuffle the cards.  He rippled the edge of the deck nervously..'

3) 'A minute passed, and another minute.'

4) 'A shot sounded in the distance.  The men looked quickly at the old man.  Every head turned towards him.'

5) 'For a moment he continued to stare at the ceiling.  Then he rolled slowly over and faced the wall and lay silent.'

For each one, choose three important language features, and three presentational features.

Decide on a perspective for each text, as well as a target audience.  Then analyse the presentational and language features and relate them back to ideas, perspectives and target audience.

You will be writing a comparison of the two texts in your mock on Wednesday, so practice comparing their language and presentational features using connectives.

Homework - Review a TV talent show - Due in 11/10/11

 1)Watch a TV talent show – X-Factor (Sat/Sun); Strictly come dancing (Fri).

2)Write a 3 paragraph review.

Success criteria:

•Variation of different kinds of sentences.

•Start and end paragraphs with simple sentences.

•Use a variety of punctuation (. , ; : - )

•Use facts about the show, your own opinion, and sarcasm.

In today's lesson, we were learning persuasive techniques.

We all made posters of the the techniques that was given by Mr Goooooooooooooodrich , then we went around the room to look at other's poster to learn all the different types of techniques. And they were :

Rhetorical questions - asking the audience/reader a question that is not meant to be answered and only make them think in their head.

Anecdotes - A short real incident story that links to the topic that you're talking about.

Cluster of three - three adjectives that make the sentence more powerful and effective.

Statistics - A number to back up your point.

Alliteration - The repetition of initial sounds in neighboring words, it makes the sentence sound a lot smoother and easier to read.

Personal pronounce - using words like 'you' , 'we', 'us' to get the audience involved .

Emotive language ( I think? can't remember..) - creating a atmosphere to make the audience feel the same as you.

etc...

We must use these techniques in our writings so it makes our writing more powerful, persuasive and forceful.

Perspectives and Concepts - 16/9/11

In today's lesson we looked at perspectives and concepts, in particular at how presentation and language features could be used to create these.

We decided that a perspective was the message that the writer was trying to convey to the reader; we decided that a concept was the main idea that the idea was based on.

We looked at an advert for Loreal, deciding that the message and concept of the advertisment were similar, with the perspective being that Loreal is a luxurious product, and the concept being that of glamour.  The purple satin curtains in the background of the image demonstrated this idea, with purple being the colour of luxury and exlusivity.  The diamonds shining in the slogan reinforced this concept.  Finally, the tag line of the product, 'because your worth it', created the impression that, although the product is a glamorous and luxurious one, the reader deserves to have this level of luxury in their life. 

Following this, we considered another three images, an I-Pod advert, and RAF advert and a Brantano advert, thinking about the perspective and audience of both.  Finally, we wrote a series of PEE paragraphs about this.
