The lord of the flies is a novel writen by Nobel prize winning authour William Golding. The book is about a group of British schoolboys stuck on a deserted island who try to conduct themselves, with disastrous results. Now that's enough about the book. The front and back covers of The Lord of the Flies is full of primary and secondary colours: Red, Blue, Green, Orange and Black. The reason that all of these illuminative colours have been used to blanket the novel is because it would catch any readers attention from a large sum of book's, matter-of-fact mine. There's more. The author also uses a big and bold title to easily inform the spectator or reader about the name, not only that, but on the front cover of "The Lord of the Flies", the author writes a little text that read's : " Winner of Nobel Prize for Literature". This little comment informs the reader that not only is the book a winner for a nobel prize, but that the book is espeacially awarded for literature. This shows that the book will not only help the reader in any situation verbally but will also help them learn a numerous amount of words, one of the reason I choose to read, The Lord of the Flies.
Fifa 11 was a crowning achievement for Ea sports last year; it took massive steps forward in both gameplay and game design. Fifa 11 has always been about delivering the most realistic depiction of football, fifa 11 hold the record for the fastest ever selling sports game. The front cover of the game is what drove and convinced consumers to purchase. Ea sports smartly used minimilistic color and language on the front cover. it has two main images of two of the worlds greatest footballers, Wayne Rooney and Kaka. The author used these footballers on the front cover because to football fanatics and young children , they are role models not just footballers. The author appeals to it's target audience of football fanatics and stereotypically to the male gender; men are more interested and enthusiastic about football. The design of the fifa 11 cover is unique ; it has red and green beams flying over the two footballers, to portray spirit and also enthusiasm , it somehow remids you of match day spirit; the bright colours indicate the supporters and how they would be feeling on the day of a football match. Also the footballers aren't directly staring at you , they're in poses that you would mostly see them do during a match. Kaka's wrist is clinched together and are in mid air to show that maybe he has just scored a goal. Whereas Wayne Rooney's face look stern and in concentration looks as if he's focused on the game 100%. The back cover uses language more than presentational techniques to persuade the consumers to buy the highly rated game. As a customer myself i have to say the back cover is what made me purchase the product ; the persuasion used in identifying the new features in the game are extrodinary.
My PEE paragraph will be about call of duty black ops, the presentation al and language features used throughout the cover. the target audience for this game is people who can afford a good yet expensive game, also people who want a new experience, stereotypically the game is bought by boys: they like violence related games, also they are very enthusiastic about new games and new experience,so in conclusion the game was mostly targeted at males. The main image of the game is of a man holding two guns, his face can not be identified as it is set in a dark mood, this has been done to make the game seem mysterious and interesting. Also the use of the dark mood makes it seem serious therefore it is not taken lightly. Call of duty has been written in a big and bold font, this has been done to make the title stand out, this will make the company more known, therefore more money, like wise "black ops" has been put in like a subtitle, this has been done to let the audience know what episode of the game they are playing.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon was a gripping sci-fi action film directed by Michael Bay. On the front cover for the movie it has a image of the main protagonists Sam and Carly, who both look gritty and scared stiff while the Deuteragonist, the leader of the autobots, Optimus Prime stares fearlessly & braverly wielding a scorching axe in his hand. The main colours used in the image (red and black) could be used to signify different emotions and meanings ; red could connote risk, war and blood as well as determination while, the black within the poster could indicate power, death, evil & mystery. This also creates a sense of enigma from the aggressive colour scheme. Prime is staring directly at the audience to get the target audience to feel as if he is calling them to watch it while looking like he is ready to fight. In the background there are various fires on buildings, smoke in the sky & relics everywhere. The title is in a dark and straight font to show that it is upfront and sombre. All of the above give the viewers of the dvd a grim tone . The director appeals to its stereotypical target the male audience, ranged 5 and above who enjoy Action & Sci-fi thrillers.
junaid My PEE paragraph will be about Toy story 3; this DVD is targeted for kids aged from 3-12. This DVD was directed by Lee Unkrich and it was produced by ‘Pixar’ and released by ‘Walt Disney’. This movie is an entertaining, animated movie that children love to watch. We know this because on the cover of the DVD there is a kid’s bedroom and there are toys in a box. This already shows that this movie is to do with toys (which obviously means it is for kids) and things that is not possible; e.g. the toys can talk, move, fight, etc. A reason for why this cover is good is because it uses primary colours throughout the whole image. This is good because this movie is for primary school children, and children do not like complicated colours and this is why it is a good idea to put features that children will like, such as a colourful poster. A colourful cover will also attract the eye of people, if someone walks past; they are bound to see it because it really stands out due to its primary colours. The cover also says “The toys are back in town” which can make a kid think that these toys are heroes and they have to be in the town otherwise the town will be very different without them. In the previous movies they were heroes and this is why children love them; even though they are small, they can change everything.
My PEE paragraph will be about the Sherlock Holmes DVD which was released in 2009. The Protagonist of the story is Sherlock Holmes or the actor that plays him, Robert Downey, Jr, (You may also recognize him from the film Iron man) The designer of the film has used very interesting presentational features to give the target audience a taster on what the film will be like before you've even watched it.
Without even watching the film you have a clue and by just looking the cover you know that the film is set during the industrial revolution in Britain. You can see this because the cover is coated in a light blue colour. Also the in the sides and corners there is steel and screws which are used in very industrial pieces of work like the Eiffel tower or London Bridge etc.
The image in the background is London Parliament but the image is shrouded in what seems to be a blue fog. This proves that the use of image and texture can show us where the film is set ie London. The blue fog would give us a sense of mystery and also because in the industrial revolution there was a lot of smoke in the atmosphere as a result of all the coal being used at this time. This shows us around about the time where the film is set.
If you've ever heard about Sherlock Holmes you would know he lived around the 1800's,the presentational features on the cover prove this to you. These Presentational features are very good because the set your mind on what to expect even before you've seen the film.
On the cover of the DVD you have the two main characters standing infront of you in clear sight looking at you. Sherlock Holmes and His companion Dr Watson. Sherlock Holmes is looking straight at the target audience with a very smug smile on his face and Doctor Watson is standing behind Sherlock with his cane on his shoulder. These images would be used to get the target audience to feel as if Sherlock and Dr Watson are Prepared for whats to come and judging by the smile on Sherlock's face they are ready for anything. Are You?
I’ll be analyzing a Dolce and Gabbana advert. This poster contains 4 women in red; red represents ferocious, stern and vicious. The dresses they are wearing are a really deep dark red blood colour and they are also wearing huge shiny silver belt around their waist; the effect of the belt is for the red to stand out even more. By wearing this petite garment it indicates that you are bold, not afraid to stand out from the crowd and mysterious. Moreover this particular Dolce and Gabbana clothing is aimed at women between 20 and early thirties. Which brings me to my next point; there is a man kneeling below one of the women and she’s holding him down while she’s standing up high. When looking at this, ‘power’ sparks into my mind as these women are exerting their power over this man with whips. The whips symbolizes power for women which is a dream more than a reality; stereotypically men have more power than women. Dolce and Gabbana are different as they know scantly clad women and sex are over used when it comes to selling a product. By going the opposite direction the plan was to mesmerize the audience by creating an item of clothing’s with undertone of luring danger, sex and secrecy. Their approach with this image is to show through fashion, that there was another world only imaginable in out dreams were we live by no rules of the usual society.
Akash Success : You follow the PEE format really well, with a clearly defined point, evidence and explanation section. I think that you should just concentrate on analysing in greater detail. Target: Saying that something is bold, eye catching or attracts the readers’ attention is quite boring. You need to be much more specific about what these presentational and language features signify. If there are lots of bold primary colours, then you need to say why. An example might be, that the book Lord of the Flies is on a theme of loss of innocence, or a childhood lost, and these colours might be representative of childhood in some way.
Abdullahi Success: You have analysed a wide range of presentational features in great detail here, and you come up with excellent points, especially the concerning the colours red and green their relationship to match day spirit. Target: 1) Sometimes you fail to give evidence to support your point i.e., ‘The back cover uses language more than presentational techniques to persuade the consumers to buy the highly rated game’. 2) Also, you have written in one very long paragraph. Your work would have been better if you had split it up.
Zelihman Success: Your analysis of the picture of the man on the front cover, particularly his face in the dark, is very detailed. Target: Saying something ‘stands out’, is not really good enough as an explanation. You need to analyse this in further detail.
Tariq Success: Your analysis of the presentational features on the cover of Transformers is excellent; the discussion of the colour scheme if detailed, although you could have gone into further detail in your explanation here. Also, the discussion of Optimus’s facial expression is good Target: You did not really explain why the target audience was men. You could have connected this back to your discussion of colours, saying the red and black seem primarily to be masculine colours.
Junaid Success: You connect the entire of your explanation back to the target audience, which makes the writing seem coherent. Target: Saying that the cover catches the eye of the reader is quite a boring and banal point; there are not many covers for dvds that are designed not to catch the eye of the reader. You need to think more carefully instead of making saying this.
Anes Success: Your analysis of some of the presentational features, particularly the smoke and the expression of Holmes and Watson is excellent. Very perceptive and detailed. Target: Anes, you spend lots of time discussing the background details of the setting and history of the film. Remember that the examiner is not going to be interested in this. They just want a detailed examination of presentational, language features, target audience, perspective and concept.
Amani Success: Your discussion of the main image, and the issues of gender that it represents is excellent – really detailed and intelligent. More of this please. Target: Amani, you are right that red represents ‘ferocious, stern and vicious’. However, this is nowhere near enough detail. Who are these three things going to appeal to? How does this help to sell the product to the target audience?
Guitar Hero (unknown) Success: Your discussion of the theme of tattoo and goth culture and how this is incorporated into the title is absolutely fantastic. A-grade stuff. Target: Your actually analysis is really fantastic. It is your spelling that is letting you down. Take real care to practice spellings, as it would be a shame to lose marks for this reason.
Sadat The illustrator of the 'guitar hero' game front cover endeavours to appeal to its target market who are, 'load music fanatics'; this is done by the illustrator's use of presentational features. the illustrator depicted a rather large and bright explosion starting at the centre of the cover and rendering in red orange and other miscellaneous fire like colours heading towards the borders of the mise-en-scene. This connotes that the gaming experience gained by purchasing their product is going to be load explosive and boisterous; linking very well to their target audience's tastes. Also, the fire like colours connote a sense of power this idea is anchored by the word 'hero' used in the actual game name. Furthermore the illustrator uses silhouettes of presumably a amiture rock band caught in the moment of performing in a rather cleche like rockstar manner; the silhouettes are used to emphasize the shape of the 'rock stars' and to make the costumer focus on the there body language which seem very passionate and involved with the music they are creating. This would also appeal to the target market who also have a great amount of passion for their music. Goth and tattoo culture are stereotypicly linked to people who enjoy load rock music; the illustrator cleverly incorporates these themes into the font of the actual game name by the use of a very dark outline and a sharp tattoo like font. The black outline used is also stereotypicly linked to a Gothic fashion code which is to shade in the outline of their eyes. The illustrator engeniusly uses gothic, rockstar and punk themes to produce a text that is strongly linked to 'rock' ideology; this is why i believe the illustrator has successfully achieved his goal in producing such a fine and well thought front cover, making the game seem very much applicable to the target market.
Dear Sir/Madam, I want to speak on behalf of all the people in our community to invoke an issue that us as citizens stress.
In recent times I have noticed that the level of littering has increased dramatically. Littering has always been an issue amidst our society. And for quite some time society has tried to eliminate, or at least minimize, the cause and effects of littering. my research reveals that there is a correlation between the amount of litter on the streets and the number of tourists in Edgeware; (less litter leads to more tourists). now we wouldn't want to lose tourists as it has such a high abode for jobs and public income, would we? Also littering is a beacon for vermin such as rats which spread disease and make the area inhospitable. But, alas, to no avail: littering persists and society is resigned to accept that we have "no choice" but to settle for a littered environment, however i strongly disagree and so i have a couple of suggestions which can be implemented to form a litter-free Edgeware.
You can make littering an explicit crime and bring in harsher laws to prevent it and i have also noticed that criminals overpopulate prisons, therefore i believe more criminals should be given community service which involves picking up litter from our streets. This would also act as a deterrence for others in our society that may litter.
More bins should be laid around the streets.
You should try incorporate the causes of littering in children's education to make it seem immoral and uncool as school children are the main culprits for littering.
You should try advertise a campaign making people stop littering.
Conventional wisdom says that if everyone were to just pick up 1 peace of litter a day, then, before long, it would all be gone. So how come that solution has never been raised and tried?
I sincerely hope you will take this issue seriously- and consider taking action very soon.
Thank you for your time, yours respectfully, Sádat Yazdani
