Perspectives and Concepts - 16/9/11

In today's lesson we looked at perspectives and concepts, in particular at how presentation and language features could be used to create these.

We decided that a perspective was the message that the writer was trying to convey to the reader; we decided that a concept was the main idea that the idea was based on.

We looked at an advert for Loreal, deciding that the message and concept of the advertisment were similar, with the perspective being that Loreal is a luxurious product, and the concept being that of glamour.  The purple satin curtains in the background of the image demonstrated this idea, with purple being the colour of luxury and exlusivity.  The diamonds shining in the slogan reinforced this concept.  Finally, the tag line of the product, 'because your worth it', created the impression that, although the product is a glamorous and luxurious one, the reader deserves to have this level of luxury in their life.

Following this, we considered another three images, an I-Pod advert, and RAF advert and a Brantano advert, thinking about the perspective and audience of both.  Finally, we wrote a series of PEE paragraphs about this.

This bullying advert shows why bullying is bad and how the victim feels. On the advert the pictured anchors the victim with blood all over him and he is also curled up on the floor. this shows us the poor young boy is scared and terrified to go school everyday I know this; he is wearing school uniform and it also is taken place in a school playground. The big bold writing tells me its a commanding message to make him think twice about what he is doing to the young boy. However there is a fence behind the victim this helps me create an image of he has no chance of escaping. The bully has also got his mates to record this because they think its funny, but if they get caught with this video by members of staff in school or the police then they will have a criminal record. It qoutes "the bully will meet its match" this suggests that when he come up to someone bigger then him or his own size he will have no chance of bullying them. overall this tells me violence is something bad and especially bullying as it is a crime. This reaches it target audience by showing the victims expressions so the bully will never get to feel that way.

  2. The cover of the book "The butterfly house" suggests that the book is sad and has characters from dark pasts. This can be seen in the picture on the cover where there is a girl leaning out the window, she is 6-9 years old ; behind her is total darkness. The girls body language; as she has her arms across her chest, could suggest insecurity; her eyes are closed which could also suggest she is trying to block or concentrate hard. The total darkness behind her could symbolize her dark past , as she is leaning out the window, it's almost like she's trying to escape from it.On the window sill is cracked paint, this might symbolize a broken family, as she is leaning on the window sill , it could be that it's falling apart right under neath her as children rely a lot on family.
The butterfly in the corner of the window sill could symbolize freedom, as it is stationary , it could symbolize the girl, free so easliy , but decides to stay, as both the butterfly and girl are on the window sill.
This is why the cover of the book could suggest it's sad and that the characters have dark pasts.

The Target audience for this Magazine are stereotypically young and middle aged women. I say this because the main image which dominates the page is a picture of Beyonce Knowles a pretty female who is well known in the fashion and beauty industry and represents young middle aged women worldwide. This makes women want to look and buy a magazines like this; they feel and know that if a women of the same age is on the front cover of a “glamour “magazine, then they know to read the magazine; they know that this magazine might have the same issues to do with beauty, and the lifestyles of women which they have a problem or want to be aware of.
Glamour is a women's magazine published by Cond Nast Publications Founded in 1939 in the United States it was originally called Glamour of Hollywood. The writers of this magazine in my opinion chose beyonce Knowles; she is a role model for many women out there; she always looks beautiful and also natural at the same time and for many women it is very hard for them to be beautiful and natural at the same time. She also wears the latest fashion and people would love to wear something like beyonce because it makes the cool and fashionable.
The colour also plays a big impact on the target audience as it determines how old you are. The reason why I say this is for example, if you have a colour such as pink. its shows that you are quite childish and love girlish things, whereas a colour like blue represents subtleness and freedom, that is why I think that they have used that colour, to show that you should feel free about the circumstances of beauty and that beyonce Knowles is here to help you be set free from the prison bars of your insecurities of beauty.

  4. The cover of this book ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ suggests that the book is old fashion and it’s about a dreadful story; you can tell by the colour of the blue sky that sparks the emotions of sadness and depression; which clearly represents the overall theme of the book. The target audiences for this book are teenagers and adults, because there are planes on the sky which tells the audience that this book is historical and involves with world war, and that middle age people might like to read something about wars as it’s not that long ago from their age. Also this book helps teenagers in their history lessons as it might be based on a true story.
The yellow font of the book title is big and in Italic, this creates the image of kindness and gentleness , it’s trying to say that even though the characters are going through a tough time, there’s always love and care during that period.
Furthermore, there are birds flying in the sky, this might symbolize freedom and the meaning of a new day as war only last for a certain time and it kind of tells us that this book might end in a good way.

  5. Mason:
Success: I really like your analysis of the image of the fence and its relation to the idea that the victim cannot escape.
Target: 1) Your writing seems like it is about perspective here i.e., that the perspective of the advert is that bullies are cruel and that victims suffer from bullying. The problem is that you do not mention perspective at all. 2) You cannot always use a semi-colon to replace ‘because’. In this situation ‘I know this; he is wearing school uniform and it also is taken place in a school playground.’ It stops the sentence making sense.

    Olivia
Success: Your analysis of all the presentational features is spot on – really analytical, creative and intelligent. I especially like your discussion of the girl’s body language and the idea that the cracked paint represents her life.
Target: The problem with this is that you don’t then connect this all the target audience. If you had done this, your work would be B/A standard. Remember, connect all the presentational and language features back to target audience.

    Sandra:
Success: I like your analysis of the colours pink and blue Sandra. Connecting colours to the choice of Beyonce for the front cover, as well as to target audience is very clever.
Target: You cannot always use a semi-colon to replace ‘because’. You need to make sure that the sentence still makes sense. For example: ‘The writers of this magazine in my opinion chose beyonce Knowles; she is a role model for many women out there’. This sentence needs a because to make sense.

    Goodnight Mister Tom (Unknown):
Success: Your analysis of the colour yellow in the title is good, although I think you could go into more detail about why yellow represents love and care. I also really like your point about the birds representing freedom and the end of war.
Target: You do mention target audience, but you should be tying all your points about presentation and language features back to this.

  6. Anuvahood is an Urban Comedy film Directed by Adam Deacon. This film is about a boy named Kenneth ('K') Fletcher. He has just left his job at ‘lainsburys’ and wants to be a respected gangster & rapper, soon he realises that he's just another wannabe bad boy. That’s a little bit about what the storyline is besides that, the target audience for Anuvahood is aimed at juveniles’ ’15 and over’ as it clearly states on the multicoloured and chromatic DVD cover. This can also be shown by the use of the ‘Main image’, in other words presentational feature; by this we can see Kenneth the protagonist of the story wearing a hoodie. This connotes stereotypically something teenagers would wear; as you wouldn’t really see 90 year old grown man wearing a hoodie. The Illustrator uses dynamic and robust, primary and secondary colours like, blue, yellow, black and purple to display an energetic and diverse atmosphere, as well as an eye catching cover for the audience. Moreover the abnormal and strange, vivid blue buildings in the background, with scattered black rectangular windows anchor the Main text ‘Anuvahood’ as it shows the audience it’s a new experience, something no one has ever seen before. Lastly the author uses a sentence from a review, “Brilliant... You’ll cry with laughter” and a 5 star rating which straight away indicates to the audience it’s a must watch film and it meets its purpose of being a comedy, as the reviewer has said it’s funny.
